Turn the Corner: Changing Expectations and Rapidly Developing Technology Means We Need to Review ITS Research Strategies

The development of intelligent transportation systems has proceeded more slowly than many proponents had hoped but technology advances may hint at future directions. Instruments in vehicles and roadsides can address safety, operations, road pricing and other issues, but standards, compatibility and obsolete technology have posed problems. In-vehicle technology appears to be gaining on roadside installations with advantages including cost, flexibility, extensibility, and the voluntary nature of equipment in vehicles.
