A Solar Powered Raspberry Pi Houston Toad Call Detection System Using Neural Network Model

The Houston Toad is an endangered amphibian living in the edge of extinction. To save from annihilation, localization of their mating call needs to be detected in order to protect the eggs from being hunted by predators. The current method of monitoring their vocalization lacks real-time and onboard voice recognition property. In this paper, a solar powered battery connected to a Raspberry Pi is designed with a microphone that records environmental sound at prescribed intervals triggered by a Witty Pi module. The purpose for developing such prototype is to deploy a trained neural network predictor model to identify Houston Toad onboard, and if it exists, send notification of time stamp and location via email and SMS over the GSM and GPRS modules to the researcher.
