Reorganize: Charting the Reorganization Course at New York City Transit

This article describes the makeovers planned for the New York City subway system under the leadership of Howard Roberts Jr., a former transportation consultant who took over in April 2007. One of his first objectives is to reorganize the management structure. Over the next three years Roberts anticipates assigning general managers to oversee each of the system’s 26 lines. In a sense, each will be managing their own small rail transit system. Roberts is also working on finding funds for keeping stations cleaner; he’s already hired an addition 313 station cleaners, and the general managers are responsible for getting the most out of the additional staff. The article also examines increased capacity—some 12 percent over the past five years—and service, as well as new equipment coming on line.
