Load characterisation of electric spring

Electric spring is an emerging technology proven to be effective in stabilizing smart grid with substantial penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources. With the technology, traditional electric appliance can be a smart load to provide voltage supporting function in the power distribution network. This paper describes the load characterisation of electric spring. The mathematical derivations are used to explain the characteristic of electric spring connected to different type of electric loads such as resistive, resistive-inductive/-capacitive and constant power loads. These results have been verified through experimental measurement. Electric spring can be incorporated with different electric loads to perform active or reactive power control. The information obtained provides useful information for the future development of electric spring and smart loads.
