A low-cost 2.45 GHz photonic band-gap patch antenna for wearable systems

This paper focuses on the development of a low-cost Bluetooth antenna for wearable systems. A photonic band-gap structure is applied on the ground plane of a patch antenna fabricated on FR-4 substrate to keep manufacturing costs minimum. This paper shows that by using a photonic band-gap structure the adequate impedance bandwidth can be obtained from low-cost substrate materials. Measured results are reported in the presence of a human.
