Operation of resonantly pumped Tm:Ho:YAG in active mirror mode

Abstract A new pumping scheme for quasi-three-level lasers is presented and benefits such as increased pump absorption, reduced upconversion and better thermal management are discussed. The scheme is tested on a typical quasi-three-level laser, Tm:Ho:YAG pumped by a titanium sapphire laser. The dependence of output power on crystal temperature and pump wavelength is investigated. In a 3 mm long crystal over 95% of the incident pump power is absorbed and a maximum slope efficiency of 54% at 19°C has been measured.
