Modelling ROTASTORE — A Highly Parallel, Short Term Storage System

The storage system ROTASTORE, produced by psb GmbH, Pirmasens, Germany, allows parallel operation of several layers of carousels. In this paper we will first assess the expected performance by means of stochastic computations. In practice such systems are often equipped with limited capabilities to reorder incoming goods to achieve more desirable storage allocation. We will present a combinatorial sequencing problem, which may be efficiently solved in an online situation. Also numerical results based on real-world data and simulation will be discussed.
