Flexural behavior of fly ash mortar ferrocement panels for low-cost housing

Flexural tests were conducted on ferrocement panels of size 750 mm x 600 mm with woven and hexagonal wire meshes in 1, 2 and 3 layers using 10%, 20% and 30% fly ash as partial replacement of cement. The main objective of this investigation was to examine the suitability of using fly ash in the mortar matrix. Test on mortar control specimens and the wire meshes were also carried out. Preliminary investigation reveals that 20% fly ash can be used as a partial replacement of cement safely with only marginal loss in the strength and the structural performance offerrocement panels with woven and hexagonal wire meshes under flexure. The structural units using the ferrocement panels can be used with confidence in a variety ofways for low-cost housing schemes, agricultural and industrial applications.
