An achromatic mode-index/diffractive waveguide lens is designed and fabricated on a Corning 7059 waveguide. The lens has a focal length of 10 mm and an F/ Hash of 5 and is designed for a nominal wavelength of 605 nm. conventional mode-index and diffractive lens elements were also fabricated for comparison. The wavelength dependence of the focal length was measured for the three lenses and was found to be in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. The usable wavelength range of the achromatic lens is found to be 49 nm, as compared to 11 nm for the mode-index lens and 5 nm for the diffractive lens. >
