Bird Species Diversity and Habitat Diversity in Australia and North America

Censuses of breeding bird populations in Australia support the conclusion reached in North American studies, that habitat diversity as measured by foliage profile is a good predictor of bird species diversity. The data also indicate that the avifaunas of forest and scrub habitats in the temperate zones of Australia and North America have reached equilibrium and are probably saturated. Equilibrium or saturation levels appear to be independent of the histories and ancestries of the avifaunas concerned.
