A method for programming a memory cell, - wherein it is determined whether the memory cell has been neutralized according to a predefined programming neutralizing criterion; - in which for the case that the memory cell was not neutralized in accordance with the predefined programming neutralization criterion, the memory cell is neutralized according to a selected programming neutralization process; and - in which the memory cell is programmed.
