Temporal aspects of storage and retrieval in free recall of categorized lists

The major purpose of the present research was to examine the temporal characteristics of storage and retrieval while manipulating variables related to the organization of free recall. In this context, two experiments evaluated the effects of a retrieval plan and degree of list organization. The provision of a specific retrieval plan led to a decrease in input processing time. In addition, a temporal analysis of recall provided support for the presence of a category exit component in the retrieval of higher-order memory units. The general pattern of results was viewed as being consistent with a search model based on the retrieval of memory units according to trace strength.
