Trunk roads, England, into the 1990s

Higher economic activity and prosperity have led to an increase in demand for transport and travel. Nearly two thirds of households now have regular use of a car compared with only 14 percent in 1951 and these changes have placed considerable demands on the road system and the trunk roads in particular. The forecasts of traffic demand indicate that this congestion will get much worse unless action is taken. This report describes progress with the construction, management and maintenance of the trunk road network since "Policy for roads" in England (Cm 125) was published in April 1987.
