A 13.5m deep cut slope supported by soil nails was back analysed by carrying out a class C type three dimensional (3D) numerical simulation. Based on the results of the 3D numerical simulation, the average Young’s modulus at the last two stages of excavation was found to be equal to about 100MPa or 2.9 times the SPT N value (MPa). The computed nail forces were generally larger than those measured in the upper rows, but they were consistent with the measured forces located in the lower half of the slope. The interface shear strength was only partially mobilised based on the distribution of the mobilised shear stresses. The deduced location of the maximum tensile force locus was about 0.31H, which was consistent with other reported observations.
