What is clinical audit? I am sure I cannot be the only one who had not quite understood what really is and what is not a true medical audit. This in spite of regular articles on audit in the Bulletin. The state of relative naivete I was in has caused me no little embarrassment when in the company of those who speak as if they know it all! Dr Williams' article (Annals, September 1996, vol 78, p406) has given answers to several doubts that bothered me and clarified other points. Reading through, I was glad that my view of medical audit was not far off the mark. Many in my boat will thank Dr Williams and the Annals for this informative article.
