New dynamic grooming approaches for multicast traffic in meshed wavelength- division-multiplexing networks

Abstract. Optical layer multicast refers to the support of point-to-multipoint connections directly at the physical layer by employing pas-sive devices known as power splitters. Since the bandwidth requirementof an individual user is only a fraction of optical channel capacity, trafficgrooming problems are becoming a crucial constituent in designingwavelength-division-multiplexing WDM networks. This work proposes anew efficient multicast traffic grooming algorithm EMGA in the dynamicscenario based on an auxiliary grooming graph. The layered auxiliarygraph represents the current network resource state and is modifiedadaptively, based on which multicast routing and wavelength assignmentcan be realized at the same time. Simulation results show that, underdifferent network loads, the EMGA has lower traffic blocking probabilityand good network resource utilization with the constraints of wavelengthcontinuity, and limited wavelengths and transceivers. © 2007 Society ofPhoto-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.
