Design of relational database schemas

Abstract The development of an optimal database schema for an enterprise and the subsequent selection of a suitable set of database relations, represent a major problem during the logical design of a relational database which has not been adequately tackled so far. The potential and limitations of the major approaches to the conceptual database schema and the relational schema design problems are evaluated briefly and a number of concepts are introduced in order to assist the database designer develop an appropriate database schema and overcome some of the problems currently encountered.
