On the Poverty of Theory

This paper seeks to show that we have a psychodynamic attachment to both the theories we espouse and the methods of research that we use, which are driven by anxieties that relate to us as persons and as social beings. In particular, the paper seeks to relate our attachment to theory to the positions we occupy in the academy and in the political world beyond the academy.
