Magnetic vector model of spin-valves

A semi-analytical phenomenology is described for spin-valve behavior. The model requires minimization of the total energy density of a two-magnetic layer spin-valve over a range of externally applied magnetic fields. It is found that all of the usual switching characteristics can be modeled by this method in such a way as to facilitate determination of basic materials parameters such as exchange and anisotropy.
