Engineering educators should consider participating in some level of professional training in educational theory and practice. Some would argue that this is especially important in the twenty-first century because today's students may learn using new models enabled by the Internet and the rise of social media. It is true that the development of theoretical models for this new type of learning is an important area of educational research. Others would argue, however, that technology is always changing and thus the desire to improve your teaching techniques shouldn't be motivated only by the buzzwords of the day. In any case, you should be motivated to learn more about teaching because you want to ensure that students graduate with the best education you can provide to them.
