Science as a Vocation in the 1990s: The Changing Organizational Culture of Academic Science.

It is of course hubris to invoke Max Weber's classic work, "Science as a Vocation," in the title of this essay. But it is unavoidable, as I will be concerned with much the same question: How might emerging and potential changes in the culture of academic science affect the work and careers of young scientists? In his lecture, Weber analyzed the academic prospects of young scholars by first considering the external conditions that govern scientific careers in the
