Awareness systems: known results, theory, concepts and future challenges

INTRODUCTION Technological developments and research in awareness systems have come a long way, since early experiences at Xerox with Media Spaces. An important finding of that early work, was that one of the most significant benefits to users of Media Spaces [1] was the peripheral awareness colleagues had of each other and of the general activity at their and the remote working environments. Several research projects have since pursued this path further, setting the awareness of people and places as one of their primary goals and giving rise to a subclass of computer mediated communication systems called awareness systems.
