Optimization of DAB/DVB Networks for Wireless Personal Services with Limited Frequency Band

In this paper we discuss the network planning problem that arises when a DAB or DVB network is designed to provide personal services. The introduction of personal services means that a part of the digital broadcasting bandwidth is used as a shared broadcast downlink channel to serve a population of individual users and/or multicast groups. In this case the characteristics of the transmitter network are determined by the capacity demand of the user population and its spatial distribution. Our Goal is to maximize the servered capcaity in the network, when the number of available frequencies is finite. We formulate the capacity planning problem as an optimization model and propose a heuristic algorithm. We demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithm by means of numerical examples, comparing achieve capacity and total emitted power to hexagonal cell plans, for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous demand distributions.
