Optical contour mapping of cutting tool crater wear

Abstract An optical crater wear measuring technique is presented which provides complete information, both qualitatively and quantitatively, on the crater development. The technique is simple, accurate, and nondestructive. This optical contour mapping technique utilizes an objective lens with a narrow depth of field, making it possible to photograph directly the depth contours of the crater. A complete contour map can be compiled from which the crater volume can be approximated.
