Practical Use of Half-Cell Potential Method for NDE of Corrosion of Reinforced Concrete Structure

This paper presents a practical use of the half-cell potential by IBEM (Inversion by BEM) for corrosion of reinforced concrete (RC) structure. In order to evaluate the corrosion of reinforcement, the half-cell potential method is currently applied extensively to nondestructive evaluation. Here, the potentials measured on a reinforced concrete wall are converted to these on the interface with rebars by IBEM. For practical use, the results of IBEM are visualized by VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) in the three-dimensional space. After the measurements, the concrete wall was broken and the rebars were removed to identify the corroded area. The results of IBEM by VRML are compared with the half-cell potential estimation by IBEM and thus the applicability of the procedure is confirmed.
