The Freeway Performance Measurement System (PeMs), which has been under development and operation since 1999, is now the de facto repository for all California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) loop detector data. The system is used in investigating everything, from the characteristics of individual loop detectors to highly aggregated performance trends across the Caltrans districts. PeMS now supports 3000-4000 reports per day, and distributes data to 55 registered Value Added Resellers, 20 of which actively retrieve real-time data. The purpose of PeMS is to collect, process, store, and make available online data from nine California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) districts (District 3-8, 10-12). The data are obtained from 23,871 loops, grouped into 9,306 vehicle detector stations. Of the 30,572 directional-miles of interstate and state highways in California, these loops cover 3,495. The PeMS 7.0 effort involved the completion of the following nine tasks: 1) Maintain Development Prototype; 2) Replace Obsolete Disks on Original Server; 3) Detailed Maintenance Screens and Training Development; 4) Enhanced Diagnostic Screens; 5) Enhanced Freeway configurations; 6) Time of Data and HOV Lanes; 7) Configure and Monitor Freeway Segments; 8) Enhance Map User Interface; and, 9) Development of a Decision Support Tool for TMS Action Plan.
