A study of the active vibration control of a cutting tool

Abstract In this paper, the use of a piezoelectric actuator to act as an active vibration damper on a cutting tool is reported. The piezoelectric actuator with an inertial mass is attached to the controlled cutting tool. The actuator resonance can be well tuned over a wide frequency range by adjusting the size of the inertial mass, so that the actuator can provide an extremely large damping force to suppress undesired vibration of the cutting tool at the resonance frequency of the actuator. Experimental results are presented to illustrate the proposed method.
