Machining complex shapes by numerically controlled EDM

Apart from 3 and 5 axes milling (possibly combined with high speed cutting) and ECM, EDM is one of the few techniques used to machine free form surfaces. This paper gives an overview of different possibilities to machine complex shapes by EDM: sinking EDM, 2D planetary EDM, 3D NC planetary EDM, Ne wire EDM for ruled surfaces, Ne contouring EDM and NC milling EDM. The latter is treated in more detail since it is a newer technology, for which machining of complex surfaces is still being developed.
