Adhesive-Bonded Shape Memory Alloy Strip Joint for Composite Fan Blade Shape Changing Concept

Adaptive polymer matrix composites (PMCs) fan blade concept is being explored by incorporating shape memory alloys (SMAs) either inside the composite or as a surface layer. The performance of the SMA-PMC fan blade system would be strongly dependent on the interfacial adhesion between the constituents. Characterizing interface strength-resistance and effective load transfer between PMC and SMA under engine service loads is an essential step to evaluate the feasibility of SMA strip (ribbon) as a potential actuator for the PMC fan airfoil shape change concept. Different finite element modeling techniques along with performing experimental coupon testing were examined with adhesive-bonded shape memory alloy strip joint configuration to validate whether this concept would be feasible for needs and aid in providing a fast and consistent modeling method to accurately characterize the stress distributions and potential bond failure locations along the bond line paths between SMA and PMC layers.
