Simulation of Internal Faults in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines

In this paper, a model for simulation of internal faults in permanent magnet synchronous machines is proposed. The method is based on coupled magnetic circuits approach [1][2][3] which make no assumption about sinusoidal and symmetrical distribution of the machine windings and therefore accounts for the whole magnetomotive force harmonics. The machine inductances are computed directly from the geometric data and winding layout. With this method, any internal fault of synchronous machines can be investigated. The paper gives details about machine modelling and simulation results under various internal fault conditions.
