The article covers the development of the Bliss Bibliographic Classification, focusing on the revised edition (BC2). BC2 is related in this article to its parent classification, and the historical and theoretical contexts of the revision are fully described. Principles and structure of the new scheme are explained, and examples of practical subject analysis and classmark synthesis are provided in the article. The current use and future prospects of BC2 are closely examined, and this includes applications of the system beyond its primary purpose of document organisation. Recent research into the use of classifications as high level knowledge structures in electronic environment is also described, and BC2 classification system is proposed as the most suitable for this purpose.
