Professor Munby (1983) makes the assertion in his article that the conceptual validity of the SAI is, at best, suspect. With this point I must concur. Indeed, the author’s modification of Wilson’s (1 967) categorization of statement type to develop a conceptual analysis of the SAI is an intellectually creative and viable approach to examining the validity of an instrument. However, I believe that the legitimate issues and problems raised by the author’s scheme bring to light a more fundamental validity problem with much of the attitudinal research conducted in
