Fuzzy Control of a Crushing Mill in a Sugar Factory

Non-linear processes with time-varying parameters can be difficult to control using classical PID techniques. Where precise plant knowledge is available, modern control techniques can be successful in providing a control system. When there is little or no precise process knowledge available, modern control theory may be of little use. Often these plants are adequately controlled by human operators. This leads to an alternative automatic control approach which uses the control strategies employed by the operators. This type of controller is referred to as a knowledge based or fuzzy controller. In this paper, the application of fuzzy control to the control of a sugar cane crushing mill is discussed.
