Issues of Real-Time Expert Systems

This paper reviews recent research work in the area of real-time expert systems. Important issues of the real-time expert systems are presented by examining characteristics of real-time applications and special requirements of the expert systems. A parallel expert system, called HOPES (Hierarchically Organized Parallel Expert System), is proposed for real-time signal processing and interpretation (SPI) applications. Some aspects of the HOPES system are discussed in detail, and it is used as an example to help sorting out the issues of expert systems for real-time applications.
