THE COMMITTEE'S WORK EMBRACES (1) STUDY OF (A) STRESSES IN EARTH MASSES CAUSED BY LOADING, IMPACT, SEEPAGE, AND OTHER FACTORS, AND (B) THEORETICAL STRESS--STRAIN RELATIONSHIPS IN COMPARISON WITH FIELD AND LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS; AND (2) REPRESENTATION OF STRESS DISTRIBUTION THEORIES, FORMULAS, AND DATA IN A SIMPLE BUT SCIENTIFICALLY SOUND FORM, CONVENIENT FOR DIRECT USE IN THE DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF HIGHWAY AND RUNWAY PAVEMENTS AND STRUCTURES. THE GENERAL PROCEDURE FOR THE COMMITTEE'S WORK IS DESCRIBED BRIEFLY, AND ITS RESULTS OVER THE PAST YEAR ARE NOTED.
