GOOD SITE INVESTIGATION PRACTICE: AN AID TO IMPROVED STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE

Much structural damage that occurs during the life of many civil engineering structures can be traced back to the failure of the design team to take full account of the geological conditions that existed at the construction site. In this paper the importance of a detailed geological survey at the site investigation stage is emphasised and current British practice is described. It is suggested that far more attention should be given to understanding the site geology in order to reduce structural damage at a later date. For the covering abstract see ITRD E111699.
