Government, State, and Cartography: Mapping, Power, and Politics in Europe, 1650-1800

Mapping in Enlightenment Europe is located in the quest for information designed to maximize state resources. This is linked to a transition in mapping from a Baroque mode of the image of power and the symbolization of knowledge to cartography understood as a crucial element in the accumulation and display of information. Mapping is linked to activities of government within Europe but also in the colonies, as well as to the changing nature of frontiers.
