Broadband and compact Vivaldi arrays in LTCC for 60 GHz point-to-point networks

This paper presents two new Vivaldi antenna array topologies that operate in the 60 GHz range. Their small size and end-fire radiation make them suitable for future 802.11ad mobile terminals. Both the two- and four-element arrays are fed by a stripline feed network that is inherently well isolated from its surroundings. A stripline-to-microstrip transition is incorporated in each array feed so that standard V-connectors can be used to conduct measurements. Low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology is used to realize the multilayered antenna prototypes. Results from within an anechoic chamber are in good agreement with simulations and show peak gains up to 11.57 dBi and impedance bandwidths that cover most of the range from 59 to 64 GHz. These characteristics make the proposed antenna arrays suitable candidates for use in wireless modules for point-to-point networks.
