Some Reflections on Progress

The first is that I am once again addressing you--members, guests, and friends of the Human Factors Society. This is the Society with which I feel most closely associated, the one to which I owe my primary allegiance, and the one to which I have devoted many years of service. The last time I had the honor of addressing this body was over 20 years ago when on October 20th, 1964, I gave my presidential address on "Words, Words, Words." Perhaps some of you here remember that talk, or remember the published version of it that appeared in Human Factors in 1965 (Chapanis, 1965). In any case, I'm pleased to have the opportunity of addressing you again with a few more words, words, words.
