Norms and formalization

Marck Scrgot’s formalization of the Imperial Collcge Library regulations is confronted with the Chisholm paradox. An attempt to solve the problems with help from a notion of time is critiziscd, and the need for certain detachment principles is clcarificd through the discussion of Loewer and Bclzcr’s system 3-D. Jones and Porn’s systcm DL is presented as a more simple and expressively rich system than 3-D, allowing separate distinctions between prima facie/actual norms and dcfcasiblc/indefeasible norms. Finally a comment is given concerning whether DL is needed to rcprcscnt Icgal knowledge in AI programs.
