Chapter 9 – Property Integration

Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the problem of identifying rigorous targets for direct reuse in property-based applications through visualization techniques and also discusses the identification of interception tasks. El-Halwagi and his coworkers introduced the paradigm of property integration. Property integration is a functionality-based, holistic approach to the allocation and manipulation of streams and processing units, which is based on the tracking, adjustment, assignment, and matching of functionalities throughout the process. The first problem that has been addressed is the property-based direct recycle when the constraints are based on one property. The property-based material recycle/reuse pinch diagram and design rules can be used to guide engineers in making process modifications to enhance material reuse. When the sink constraints and the process sources are characterized by multiple properties, it is necessary to address these properties simultaneously. Because properties or functionalities form the basis of performance of many units, it will be very insightful to develop design procedures based on key properties instead of key compounds. Therefore, the design and integration can be carried out in the cluster domain by focusing on the relevant properties. Then the design can be mapped back from the cluster domain to the property domain. The targeting procedure identifies the targets for fresh, waste, and material reuse without commitment to the detailed design of the network matching the sources and sinks.
