CINECA made available to associated universities and the scientific community a new computer: a BCX. A Linux cluster with 5120 CPU, based on an InfiniBand network and IBM blade centre nodes with Opteron dual core processors. BCX represents the ideal link between departmental level computing and the “High-End” computing typical of supercomputers dedicated to capability computing, in virtue of its chosen architecture, by now familiar to researchers, and its software environment, conceived to allow users to work conveniently and with easy access. The parentage with other Linux clusters must not confuse users, however, and lead them to think BCX is not a very innovative supercomputer; on the contrary, in the context of clusters BCX represents a frontier, and in some ways a new point of arrival for a technology, that of clusters made of commodity components, pushed to the limits.
