The concept of woonerf zone applied in university campuses: the case of the campus of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

Abstract In this paper, the concept of transferring the idea of woonerf zone from residential areas to university campuses is examined and the campus of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is used as a case study for future implementation. The benefits of such an approach seem to be promising, since it may alleviate the tension between drivers and pedestrians and increase significantly the accessibility and road safety creating thus a livable and sustainable campus’ environment open to the city of Thessaloniki. Preliminary results of a relevant questionnaire survey are presented showing a positive response from the academic community.
