INTEGRAL BRIDGE ABUTMENT DETAILS IN PRACTICE AND IN THEORY

This paper describes the principles of integral abutments, and presents examples of different designs currently in use in North America. It also suggests that research be undertaken into the performance of a very simple design with no abutments at all. The thermal movements that are expected in integral bridges and the effect this has upon the pavements and embankments is discussed. For the covering abstract see IRRD 860342.
