Measuring the process of role change during the transition to adulthood

Abstract Role changes are among the most significant changes that occur during the transition from adolescence to adulthood. The role of student is left, and the roles of adult worker, spouse, and parent are entered. In this paper, event history data are used to examine alternative approaches to operationalizing the process of role change. Issues surrounding the measurement of particular role changes are considered in the context of analyzing gender differences in the timing, sequencing, and interrelationships among role changes for cohorts born in the United States during the early 1940s.
