A multi-type heat pump with Electronic expansion valve(EEV) as an expansion device and inverter compressor was simulated with a variation of compressor speed and building capacity. EEV was used to extend capacity range of the heat pump. The program was also developed to calculate actual system performance with the building load that was changed with climate during a year. As a result, the optimum operating compressor frequency and opening of expansion device were decided for a given load. As compressor speed increased, the capacity of heat pump increased and flow area of EEV should be adjusted to have wide opening, and the coefficient of performance(COP) of the heat pump decreased due to increment of compressor power input. For a given load the peak COP point was decided according to the compressor speed. And the total load of indoor units is constant, the operating frequency increased as the fraction of load in one room increased. So compressor power input increased and coefficient of performance decreased.
