Model-based multi spike initialization of blind adaptive equalizers

In this paper, a model-based initialization scheme for blind adaptive equalizers is proposed. It extends the widespread used but arbitrarily chosen center spike approach by utilizing knowledge of the time-delays of the underlying multipath transmission channel. If information about the environmental properties of the channel are available the delays can be estimated using a sufficient physical model. The results obtained with a simulated underwater multipath channel demonstrate that incorporating partial knowledge of the channel into the initialization procedure leads to an improved performance compared to a conventional center spike initialization.
