Integration of signal processing and medical image for evaluation of brain function on Globus

The demand for health care using telemedicine is set to increase, because specialized medical care is needed throughout the world. In particular, the evaluation of brain function has become important in order to diagnose dementia, cerebrovascular disease and the other brain diseases when early symptoms appear. However, the brain is a complex organ in comparison with other organs, such as the stomach, liver, kidney, lung, heart, and so on. Therefore, it requires both high-technology equipment and people with specialized medical knowledge in order to adequately investigate brain function in detail. In this research, we propose a new techniques for brain function evaluation that combines Globus, which is a system of networked virtual supercomputers (a metacomputer), and MPI (Message Passing Interface), which is a message communication library. A parallel computing and networked visualization system is developed. This system could be very helpful for the early discovery, diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases.
