Visualization of Urban Traffic for the Management of Smart Cities

Smart cities hold the promise of lowering the cost of traffic congestion, thereby improving productivity and protecting the environment against the excessive emission of toxic gases, thereby promoting sustainability. This paper elaborates on a visualization tool for urban traffic that will be accessible to every user, from students to professionals. The tool is interactive and customizable, to suit the user's preferences. The software is applicable to multiple case studies, with the capability to observe trends in traffic by the naked eye. The visualizer plays another role of verifying the traffic principles implemented for the simulation and reinforces their relevance in the context of future cities. The trends observed for an urban setting are generalized to be applicable to an assortment of urban areas and aid in the policy planning for sustainable growth. Visualization is the gate through which any user can step into the world of simulation and apply it to conceptualize solutions for smart cities.
