A Data Warehouse and Analysis Toolkit for Transportation System

Modern cities are facing rapidly growing traffic congestion challenge. The transportation authorities and governments need to develop various real-time intelligent approaches to improving the transportation situation, including route guidance, traffic control, smart parking management, smart public transportation, high traffic road user charging, etc. They also need long term transportation planning in order to systematically manage and optimize transport infrastructure and the number of vehicles and drivers. Both the real-time approaches and long term planning require a decision support system for consistent transport performance analysis and measurement, and right decision making. This paper presents the development of a data warehouse and business intelligent system called Transportation Information Warehouse and Analysis Toolkits, or TIWAT for short, for decision support. TIWAT includes a transportation information warehouse that consolidates data from various data sources, and transportation analysis toolkits built on top of the warehouse. It also discusses the real business requirements regarding transportation information analysis and how TIWAT is designed to address these requirements.
